International Day of Women in Science and Medicine (February 11): Inspiration for Future Generations

February 1st, 2025

Every year, February 11 is celebrated as the International Day of Women in Science, a day dedicated to recognizing the contributions of women across all fields of science, technology, engineering, and medicine. This day not only honors women who have left an indelible mark in the world of science but also inspires young generations to follow their passions, overcome obstacles, and achieve remarkable success.

One of the most important messages of this day is the significance of investing in education and providing girls and women with access to all resources necessary for developing their potential. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, women in science and medicine make significant contributions but still face numerous challenges, from the lack of adequate resources to cultural stereotypes that often hinder their progress.

My name is Šeper Ilma, and I am a sixth-year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine in Tuzla, passionate about science and medicine. The path I chose has been neither easy nor straightforward, but thanks to my passion for medicine and science, I feel increasing satisfaction with what I do every day. Through my work and dedication, I hope to become part of a generation of women who inspire others to pursue their dreams.

As a scholarship recipient of the Bosana Foundation, I have had the opportunity to receive support that has enabled me to focus on my educational and professional journey. This foundation has helped me stay focused on my goals and, despite the challenges faced by women in Bosnia and Herzegovina, not give up. I believe it is crucial to support young women who aspire to careers in science and medicine because every one of us deserves the chance to realize our potential.

I find inspiration in many women, especially my professors at the faculty. Additionally, thanks to the Bosana Foundation, many women in science have emerged whose work and research improve our daily lives and inspire us. One such woman is Anela Zorlak, a young geneticist from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through her work in genetics, Anela demonstrates the importance of having courage and passion for science. Her innovations and contributions to the field of genetics are already influencing research development in BiH and beyond, serving as a true inspiration for all of us.

Another example is Dr. Saima Đipa Zahirović, a former Bosana scholarship recipient, whose work and achievements in the field of medicine also show that with support and dedication, no obstacle is insurmountable.

The Bosana Foundation, through its scholarships and projects, enables young science enthusiasts to pursue their education and grow into top experts. This February 11 is the perfect moment to honor women who have already achieved great things and encourage new generations to follow in their footsteps.
